n aircraft owner recently asked Santa for
a glass six-pack - a primary flight display.
Good news for the avionics shop, the
OEM and, of course, the pilot. Saves weight, reduces
maintenance - you know, plenty of good things.
Oh, the owner also asked for a glass multifunction
display with matching glass engine instrumentation.
And for his New Year's Day birthday, the pilot wished
for a new IFR-approved WAAS GPS - of which all
models available today come with their own MFD.
And lest we neglect it, the owner wants all the
hardware needed to meet the ADS-B Out mandate
looming in less than 22 months - that means some

changes or additions to the transponder.
Then comes the bad news.
Depending on the aircraft, that wish list may prove
somewhat tight to shoehorn into the available panel
space. Or, alternatively, it may create some weight-andbalance issues - again, depending on the airframe and
engine combination.
Who wants a panel upgrade that forces the pilot to
load a couple of bowling balls in the luggage space?
With proper research and planning, the solution to a
shortage of panel real estate may be to selectively go
with remotely mounting some of the avionics involved
in such an ambitious upgrade job.
