AVIONICS UPGRADES
Continued from page 21

Typically, the four-digit discreet code ADS-B Out
squawks to identify an aircraft to air traffic control
can be entered via a direct device or through the PFD
control where needed.
Ditto for the power switching and ident controls of
the remotely mounted ADS-B transponder. It's more
than just a code-entry process.
The latest incarnation of transponders approved for
ADS-B use prove that size isn't everything. Some of
the available, approved options take up about half the
thickness of a deck of poker cards, in part because
they don't sport control faces. In exchange for
needing less space, these units also typically weigh
less - with all control functions coming through the
PFD controls.
ADS-B In receivers
Here's a technology available in a dizzying array
of packages and options - the receivers delivering
traffic and weather imagery from the FAA's flight
information systems-broadcast and traffic information
services-broadcast.
Many ADS-B Out systems include an ADS-B In
receiver in the same box. Some ADS-B Out solutions
exist within the transponder itself, with some of those
taking position data from a WAAS GPS navigator
and others using a WAAS GPS navigation engine
indigenous to the ADS-B Out box. Some solutions
exist wholly within the transponder itself - the
Out transmitter, In receiver and the GPS engine all
contained within the same box.
Many of these solutions take code entry through a
connection to the PFD.
Other remote-mounted options
Arguably, one of the earliest devices commonly
mounted remotely was the old 121.5 MHz emergency
locator transmitter, or ELT. Years ago, in an effort
to reduce the number of false ELT alarms, the FAA
mandated an in-the-panel control capable of manually
triggering the ELT and able to visually signal to the
pilot that the ELT had been tripped.
The new 406 MHz ELTs offer more flexibility in
mounting, while retaining the panel-mounted control
panel - a component barely larger than an inch by a
half-inch.

Standby or second attitude sensors
These days, pilots can choose to add a box -
remotely mounted, of course - capable of sensing
attitude changes and transmitting that attitude,
altitude and heading data for display on an available
tablet computer.
Some of these boxes also offer a connection to a
panel-mounted PFD, the better to serve as a standby,
stand-alone emergency indicator for the primary stack
of instruments.
If connected to a standby battery, such a system
offers the flyer with the comfort of an alternative PFD
independent of the aircraft electrical system.
CO detectors go remote
Guardian Avionics offers a TSO-approved carbon
monoxide detector, the AERO 452-201, that can be
mounted remotely or in the panel.
A compact and lightweight unit mounted in a small area
behind the panel, the 452-201 combines highly accurate
CO detection for the cockpit as well as cabin pressure
warning and the ability to display on an external unit. It
is a suitable solution for owners and operators seeking
protection from the dangers of carbon monoxide in their
certified aircraft as a remote unit with integration to display
on an existing PFD, MFD or engine monitor system.
The included RS-232 serial connection allows added
CO level reporting and alerts to be displayed on a variety
of PFDs, MFDs and some engine monitoring systems.
Compact and lightweight, the AERO 452-201 fits into small
spaces thanks to its 2.25-inch-by-1.5-inch size. Its 3.5-ounce
weight should pose no weight-and-balance complications.
Operator options: Helping owners select
from remotely mounted options
Stepping into the remote-mounted avionics field
should follow the usual path to an avionics upgrade.
That means first identifying what the operator wants out
of the upgrade, then identifying the options available to
meet the goal or goals.
Helping the aircraft owner identify the options
available and relevant to the desired outcome should
start with a full understanding of the goals of the
upgrade, then focusing on the equipment capable of
meeting those needs.
From there, it's a matter of finding what fits among
the options that work and planning the work.
The end goal is, as always, sending the owner off
satisfied with the choices made, because they work. q
