Mike Gros of Bevan-Rabell

with Mike Gros to learn more about
his work at Bevan-Rabell as well as
his life away from the airport.

What is the scope
of your work as vice

I wear many hats, and I
still do the bench repair on
nav/comms, transponders,
DMEs and GPS. I am also
in charge of the drug and
alcohol program, calibration
of equipment, and overall
managing of the bench area.
We have four bench techs
including myself. We're
looking forward to hiring
another tech this year.

What were you
like as a kid?
I took my remote-control car
apart and then couldn't put it
back together. I never dreamed
of getting involved in electronics,
much less avionics. I grew up in a
small town northwest of Wichita

named Andale. I was born in 1970
and, growing up, I remember all
the strikes and layoffs at airplane
companies, so I thought the
aviation industry was too unstable. I
had a cousin who worked for Beech,
and he took me to a tech school
when I graduated from high school
to take an aptitude test.
As it turned out, I thought I
wouldn't mind learning electronics,
and I was on the honor roll. I
thought I would get involved in
another area of electronics. My
uncle's neighbor owned BevanRabell, and he was complaining
to my uncle that he couldn't find
anyone who was young and wanted
to work. My uncle said, "My
nephew is about to graduate."
I interviewed twice. I was 20
years old and wasn't sure. But
27 years later, I couldn't imagine
a better career. I feel like I have
friends across the country who I
have never met.

It turned into a good
first job for you.
Robert Patterson, who was owner
at the time, was patient and let
me learn. Kent McIntyre also was
patient and helped me grow. I
worked for two great owners.

day for you?
I'm here no later than 7:30
