Maria slammed into the southeastern coast of Puerto Rico with
sustained winds of 155 miles per hour.
Some 30 hours later, residents of the island nation were literally
transported back to 1817 - no electricity, no running water, and
no communications - none of the daily necessities we take for
granted. But unlike the early 1800s, this time the world was
watching. As soon as it was safe, emergency responders from the
U.S. and around the world converged on the island nation to help.
One of those teams was made up of representatives from
SD and COMSAT who traveled to help establish reliable
satellite communications for other first responders.
The team that supported the relief efforts was comprised of
Sean Stevenson and Marcos Vargas from SD, John Smith from
COMSAT, and Kevin McFadden, a representative from Cisco.
"During the Hurricane Maria support efforts, the SD/
COMSAT teams gathered readily available communications
equipment to support a continuity crisis situation," said Smith,
COMSAT's director of solutions engineering. "We didn't
understand the severity of the situation, but we knew there was
no power, and communications were down all over the island."
