data communications, you need to have a plan and a reliable
alternate source."
Of course, it's not only your data communications network
that can get blown away. Look back at the catastrophic hurricane
flooding in the Houston area, and it's not hard to imagine your
whole computer network being under water.

The cloud will survive the storm
Planning for the unthinkable is exactly why SD invested
in building a virtually hurricane proof data storage center
at its global headquarters and network operations center in
Melbourne, Florida.
"Our data center is a poured concrete and double-steel
reinforced tilt wall building with no windows, which is built to
withstand a direct hit by a Category 5 hurricane," Stevenson said.
"It has redundant power and terrestrial connectivity solutions via
multiple vendors. It has been designed to aviation specifications
providing world-class cloud and storage solutions to ensure
our customers, whether they be avionics shops, corporate flight
departments or municipal utilities, that their critical data - and
there's a lot of it - is safe. We have the ability to use a private cloud
to store their critical data through both our data center in Florida
and our backup center in Denver. We even back up our backups."
Stevenson added that while hurricanes and other natural
disasters are top-of-mind with most business owners when it
comes to backing up their data, today there's an emerging threat
that strikes without any warning: cyberattacks.
"We also offer an array of cybersecurity tools to stop other
threats regardless of their source," he said. "There is always a
potential disaster in the electronics and data storage areas."
Stevenson explained that the new cybersecurity offerings are
in response to the growing number of global cyberattacks on
the aviation community.

Good lessons learned
Whether it's weather or cyberattack, you should plan now for
what you hope never happens.
"If you're using any levels of data, then you need to have it
backed up remotely from your site," Stevenson said. "That's
where solutions like our data center come in. As for poststorm communications, you should at least have a grab-and-go
satellite communications solution on-hand. If a business owner
is concerned about paying for a system they won't use all the
time, we have the GX fly-away kit that they can quickly activate
whenever they need it."
"Whether you're an avionics shop or a corporate flight
department, you should think about what is essential to being
able to keep your operation up and running," Smith said. "Even
if it is at a slower data pipe speed, it's going to be better than no
data communications capabilities at all.
"Technology is great, but what's important is having the
expertise and knowledge to understand the situation and what
tools you need to mitigate the problem. But all must be based
on the customer's needs - and not all customers need the same
level of support.
"Taking that first step toward working with professionals
to develop a sound communications plan can help identify
the essential business services required to keep your operation
running. After the fact is not the time to realize you should have
had a plan in place." q
