t's a story of a system with a gestation period nearly a generation
long. That system: The Wide-Area Augmentation System, or
WAAS, the technology that enhances the accuracy of the Global
Positioning System to a level exceeding any previous navigation system.
Fifteen years into its approved operation, WAAS GPS supports precision
en route navigation, thousands of new precision-approach procedures,
ground-vehicle tracking and a host of other uses, among them are nonaviation users such as boaters, surveyors, mountain climbers and backcountry hikers.
Despite all the time that's passed, options for equipping with an approved
WAAS GPS navigator remain limited, with the majority of the available
all-in-one units combining the satellite navigation capability companion
multifunction display needed to interface with the electronics and see the
flight on a moving-map display, VHF comm and nav radios, and a handful
with nothing but the WAAS GPS navigator and the MFD.
The conception of the idea of precision GPS navigation first emerged in
the mid-1980s - as the first GPS satellites took flight - after boosters of the
much-vaulted Microwave Landing System, or MLS, finally relented and
gave up on its prospects.
MLS promised multiple precision approaches to multiple runway ends
from a single MLS transmitter sited near the airport. MLS demonstrated
