employed to reduce GPS accuracy for military purposes. When
DoD lifted Selective Availability, GPS accuracy improved to about
15 meters - just under 50 feet.
WAAS, as designed, improved GPS accuracy significantly more,
with mean deviations commonly below 2 meters - 6.5 feet - with 2
meters to 3 meters - 10 feet - nominal.
In real-world practice, WAAS GPS delivers accuracy levels of 5
feet - enough to move the technology up above the ILS accuracy.
The International Civil Aviation Organization accepted ILS as the
global standard for instrument approaches back in 1947 with an
accuracy standard of plus or minus 10.5 meters - almost 35 feet.
Standard for approaches - decision height, and the like - were
predicated on that accuracy level. So much more is possible now
thanks to precision WAAS approaches.
WAAS beyond the approach improvements
Thanks to its high accuracy level and high position-update
rate, WAAS GPS delivers far more than simply serving as the
heir-apparent to replace ILS for precision-approach needs.

You could, in fact, argue that we would have no NextGen
program without WAAS GPS. As the backbone technology
making possible both the advances of NextGen and the vast
expansion of precision-approach procedures to thousands of
runway ends - all of them gaining the benefits with no ground
infrastructure other than lighting to get to the lowest available
minima - WAAS GPS delivers in multiple ways.
Today, the benefits of WAAS GPS enhance the utility and
safety of tens of thousands of aircraft equipped with TSO'd
navigators employing the technology. Thousands more benefit
from new-generation, compact WAAS GPS receivers serving
as data sources for the foundational technology of NextGen:
Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast, or ADS-B.
Airborne ADS-B systems broadcast to controllers precise
position data about 100 times per minute using an approved or
compliant position source. WAAS GPS is currently the main
technology for meeting the requirement, although the ADS-B
rule doesn't specify a technology, only standards for accuracy
and update-rate.
While other data-source options exist, WAAS GPS
overwhelmingly wins in the count of ADS-B-compliant aircraft,
some capable of doing nothing more than providing the data
