needed for ADS-B as blind encoders; others serve that role as
well as the role of en route navigator and precision-approach
receiver.
The many benefits of WAAS GPS
From the top, an approved WAAS GPS navigator can be used
to fly GPS/RNAV approaches, both precision - like the precision
Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance approaches
available to nearly 4,000 runway ends in the U.S.
Several other approach types exist that also use WAAS GPS
to improve accuracy and reduce minima compared to their
predecessor versions.
Aircraft flying with approved WAAS GPS navigators can use
them to fly with GPS as their sole navigation source on crosscountry IMC flights.
And, as noted above, the high level of accuracy from WAAS
GPS allows us to use navigators and blind position sources to
inform our ADS-B Out systems, synthetic vision systems and
traffic-awareness systems.
Then there are all those non-aviation users benefiting from the
open availability of WAAS GPS, from maritime navigation to
surveying work, farm planting and harvesting, to the application

of agricultural chemicals, whether by aerial conveyance or by
ground application.
Meanwhile, the number of aviators enjoying the benefits of
WAAS GPS navigation would be higher were there more receivers
available at more-affordable prices. But with the available options in
navigators currently limited to a few all-in-one boxes, the selection
remains narrow.
All-in-one systems combine a multifunction display with a
WAAS GPS navigation engine and two VHF radios, a VHF
communications radio and a conventional VHF navigator.
Garmin, which brought aviation into the era of GPS navigation,
invented the all-in-one two decades ago with the debut of the GNS
30 and GNS 430 all-in-one units. Avidyne and BendixKing followed
suit, but not before offering stand-alone GPS navigators employing
pre-WAAS GPS technology.
Avionics makers indicate that they're meeting demand for WAAS
GPS with their existing all-in-one options.
While the prospects of seeing simpler, WAAS GPS/MFD-only
navigators appears dim, the utility of both approved and compliant
WAAS GPS engines continues to serve pilots of many stripes.
