safety things to consider. A non-standardized layout will
just scare other pilots away."
What about Wi-Fi?
No matter why you're looking to upgrade your avionics, if you frequently carry passengers or just want the
added convenience of connectivity for yourself, it's a
good idea to consider adding Wi-Fi capabilities to your
aircraft.
"Cabin connectivity and Wi-Fi is big now," Duggins
said. "Companies are requiring Wi-Fi, especially in the
cabin-class aircraft - Piper Meridians on up. The boss
wants the employees to work while they are traveling."
"In most cases, 2020 mandate compliance and Wi-Fi
are a winning combination on the value-added side,"
Jordan said. "But, if you're thinking of selling the aircraft
in the next year or so, I might hold off on the Wi-Fi unless
you can use it now. Technology is changing too fast, and
in a year or so there may be new technology that's lighter,
faster and less expensive than what's available today."
On the subject of cabin communications upgrades,
Ahles said, "Installing a $15,000 Garmin satellite phone
system may not be such a good idea as a value-adding
investment. Technology is going to change, and the next

owner may not want to pay the monthly fees to use it all
the time. You need to look at upgrades like that from the
next owner's perspective."
Don't overlook the value of a good
avionics installation
When it comes to any avionics upgrade, never underestimate the added value of working with a good, experienced, authorized avionics shop.
"I would strongly encourage any buyer of avionics to
thoroughly research the avionics shop they are considering before they sign any contract," Ahles said. "Make
sure that whomever you choose has a good reputation
and will stand behind their work.
"Too many times, the selection is made for the lowest
cost or convenience - maybe the shop is located on their
home airport, but location is really secondary. Don't be
afraid to leave your airport and fly 100 miles to find an
avionics shop with a great reputation for working on
your aircraft type. And don't be afraid to spend 10 percent more to get the job done right.
"Shop research is as important as equipment research
when it comes to getting the best value in your panel
upgrade. When it comes to work on your airplane, don't
settle for anything less than what you feel confident is
the best you can get." q
