designed for business jets but with all the earmarks of a system
scaleable to smaller aircraft.
Helping make the GHD 2100 a compact system is
Garmin's success in designing a package without employing
the bulky, heavy cooling technologies used by large-jet HUD
systems. Despite its compact size and weight, the GHD
2100 provides full-size performance with a field of view 30
degrees wide, placed at a focal point a comfortable distance
from the pilot's eyes.
Garmin plans to offer the GHD 2100 with three-dimensional,
synthetic vision technology with the intention to ease the
transition pilots make from flight using the HUD to flight by
visual reference. Its current iteration will make use of infraredbased enhanced-vision technology only.
The launch customer for the GHD 2100 was Textron
Aviation's Cessna Division and its Citation Longitude with
Garmin's G5000 Integrated Flight Deck. Of course, the GHD
2100 will integrate well with other business jet cockpits.
Rockwell Collins: HGS-3500 Compact HUD
Rockwell Collins designed its HGS-3500 Compact HUD
system for use in aircraft as small as owner-flown singleengine turboprops through midsize business jets, and from
its appearance it would fit well into some of the lightest jet
cockpits.
Crew flying behind Rockwell Collins' Pro Line Fusion
system also gain the benefits of enhanced vision systems,
such as the company's EVS-3000 sensor, displayed on the
avionics maker's HUDs.
But the major advance of the HGS-3500 is its all-in-one
package of processor, projector and combiner. It's among
the smallest systems yet put into service. And it qualifies
for HGS-only CAT I and CAT II ILS instrument-approach
minima in the U.S.
The EVS sensor also brings with it the Enhanced Flight
Vision System Credit the Federal Aviation Administration
allows under Federal Aviation Regulation 91.175, allowing
lower approaches.
MyGoFlight SKYDISPLAY HUD-LCD180
Now we're talking small.
According to Charlie Schneider of MyGoFlight, the
dominant reactions from pilots trying his company's new lightplane HUD system boil down to these:
"Wow," covered by "Cool," followed by "Useful," followed
by, "Easier than I thought."
"People have expressed surprise that the image is so clear

and easy to discern with the blend of flight graphics and
thermal-imaging display," he said of people who tried out the
MyGoFlight SKYDISPLAY HUD LCD180.
"We have completed all the major work on the design and
development for the projection unit and the processor, and
getting the optics perfect," Schneider explained.
Now in its fourth incarnation, he said, the projector and
combiner assembly now weighs barely a pound, and it continues
to fly in tests aboard a Cirrus SR22 and working with Aspen
Avionics PFD and MFDs, and synthetic-vision sensors.
"With some configurations like with Aspen, we can eliminate
some of the hardware," he said. The processor working with
the Aspen equipment is a separate box, but integration with the
Aspen units was easy thanks to their Ethernet connections.
"We're starting work with the FAA in March," he said
in early February. "Our approval target: late this year or
early 2019."
The approval process planned to get the HUD
into certificated aircraft will be a supplemental type
certificate. MyGoFlight also plans to offer the HUD to the
experimental market.
The price may be more than originally quoted, Schneider
cautioned, but it will still "be under $15,000."
The small-plane challenge
The smallest package found as an operational option
was an experimental-aircraft system designed to work with
experimental avionics - and as small as it was, it posed a couple
of issues for mounting the projector/processor, and the combiner
yielded a narrow field of view than other systems.
Still, it is a functional system and, at $300, is gaining traction
within the experimental community. Rockwell Collins HGS3500 arguably presents the smallest package overall, but price
remains an issue for the smaller, lower-value aircraft in the
general aviation fleet.
But as MyGoFlight, Rockwell Collins and the maker of the
experimental system demonstrate and technology marches on,
the form factor and weight continues to shrink toward systems
suitable for the majority of light aircraft - and as the $300 price
for the experimental system shows, price pressures continue
to move costs lower.When those lines will cross to deliver a
compact system price for the majority, only time will tell. But
the trend is in the right direction. q
