The Airborne 1090 Analysis
Summary detects whether the aircraft
is airborne or on the surface, with
surface reports only available at 35
commercial airports, with another
eight slated to receive this system.
It identifies the aircraft's In and Out
capabilities, start, end, and duration
times, the emitter category, and
antennas.
Available on the FAA website, the
PAPR User's Guide addresses each of
the report's items with some detail. But
finding the parameters that fail the test
are as easy to see as red lights.
Part 3 of the User's Guide,
"Parameter Description," decodes
some of the more esoteric
abbreviations. Some, like "Baro
Alt," for barometric altitude, are
easy. Others, like NAC, followed
by a lowercase letter, are FAA code
for Navigation Accuracy Category
for position and velocity. NIC is
Navigation Integrity Category, which
indicates the radius of confinement
around the aircraft, and SIL, Source
Integrity Level, measures the
probability of not being in this bubble
of airspace. SDA, System Design
Assurance, measures the likelihood of
the system sending bad data.
In its process of ADS-B checks
and balances, working from the
aircraft configuration document, at
predetermined points of its installation,
DMFS verifies the proper configuration
with ADS-B test equipment. And it
conducts full ADS-B tests after avionics
maintenance, including software
updates.
As a double check, Hill requests
a PAPR that looks at the customer's
flight home, he said, "but I know it
will pass because of our ADS-B test
box verification process." q
