meetings include greater emphasis on work orders and
technical writing, and the addition of a surface-mount
soldering exercise and new surface-mount soldering
equipment.
The newest area of our curriculum is the addition
of the UAV class. This class provides a well-rounded
approach to the world of unoccupied or unmanned aerial
vehicles. The class includes the history and governance
of these modern wonders, as well as the types of
vehicles, launch and recovery methods. Our program
includes ground-control stations and the maintenance of
the systems with an emphasis on computers, networking
and software installation.
The class covers the assembly, setup, and basic
programing of a commercial-grade quadcopter. Also
included in the course are several lessons needed for the
Part 107 UAV operator's certificate.
Avionics News: How is your program set up? Part
147 with avionics, stand-alone avionics, degree program,
certificate program?
Thurman: Our program is currently a stand-alone
avionics program with a diploma in as little as 13 months
and an associate degree with an additional three months

of classes. We have five core electronics with three
aircraft systems classes and the UAV class. Classes are
six weeks long and run from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., five
days a week.
Spartan also offers a bachelor's degree in aviation
maintenance management. With the recent agreement
with American National University, we will offer a
master's degree, as well. Our degree classes are available
on-ground or online.
Avionics News: Where are your graduating
students being placed? Are many taking jobs outside of
aviation?
Thurman: Graduates are being placed with large
aviation and aerospace companies like Bombardier and
General Atomics, as well as with smaller entities such as
Duncan Aviation and Camtronics.
Their skill set is also highly sought in the oil and gas,
biomedical, and transportation industries. Students will
often gravitate toward these industries for transferability
and travel opportunity.
Avionics News: What is the typical yearly salary
of one of your graduates?
Thurman: Our aircraft and avionics equipment
mechanics and technicians are typically starting around
$30 per hour.
