cost of producing high-cost avionics.
The committee found the cost of
certification was a significant factor in
the final price tag. This conversation
was parallel to the formation of the
Part 23 rewrite process, and many
of the frustrations and challenges
identified by this ad hoc committee
were carried into the Part 23
rulemaking committee.
For the past decade, both industry
and the FAA have been hard at work
to modernize Part 23 certification
standards for small aircraft, in an effort
to promote the installation of safetyenhancing equipment. As a result, of
the Part 23 rewrite as well as numerous
industry initiatives (including our
own), the introduction of these
new, lower-cost alternatives have
reinvigorated an otherwise dying sector
of recreational aircraft upgrades.
In many cases, the reinvigorated
consumer isn't stopping with simple
alternate equipment installations; this
renewed excitement is reflecting in full
system upgrades.
If you happen to read type-club
blogs and/or Facebook, you will find
owners of these aircraft are thrilled
with the new, lower-cost offerings. And
we should be, too. This is an untapped
market for us, having been traditionally
offering our certified products and
services to traditional Part 23, 25 and
27 markets.
A common theme during the rewrite
of Part 23 regulations was "twice the
safety at half the cost." That rings true

even more so today. For this segment
of recreational flier, they now have
a plethora of exciting "CERTIFIED"
avionics options; and the shops have a
potentially new stream of revenue.
Let's keep it going, and remember:
Contrary to industry chatter, these are
certified systems!
