Meeting customer expectations
and other challenges
For Botha, operators' lack of knowledge about
Australia's regulatory requirements poses challenges,
especially when trying to help customers maintain and
equip their aircraft.
"One big challenge is customer expectation versus
industry rules and regulation," he explained. "Customers
tend to think of their aircraft like a personal vehicle -
that they can do to it what they want. It's one of our
biggest struggles in aviation in Australia. The customers
don't appreciate the extent of the regulations, and what
we need to go through to keep the machines serviceable.
For them, it's a hobby and they want to treat it like a car,
but it can't be treated like a normal personal vehicle."
Botha highlighted another challenge, one that affects
marketing and promoting his business in a small
industry..
"From a trend perspective, in Australia we are up and
down," he said. "Australia is a small country, and we don't
have that many aircraft. For us, the better your service, the
better your product, the more clientele you'll get. Customers
seem to move around between companies a fair bit.
"In my opinion, Australian aircraft avionics shops
tend to avoid competing against one another. You never
know when you'll need to rely on another shop. The
customers decide where they want to go. If you provide
a service and it's better than others, they will most likely

come to you. It's a difficult industry to work in, but
it is definitely rewarding. We provide the best service
we can, and hopefully that is sufficient to draw in new
customers." q
