But why is there such a gulf between the types of
users? Well, it seems to come down to the simple fact
that some pilots are a bit lazy when it comes to hitting
the proverbial books, and others aren't. It's just human
nature.
"I read a study on consumer electronics and learned
that, typically, folks who buy modern electronics
devices that are quite capable will only learn to use
about 10 percent of those capabilities," said Scott
Gregory, executive vice president of avionics sales
for Leading Edge Avionics. "I've been in the avionics
business for 40 years, and in my opinion, that's about as
deep as most aircraft owners go in learning."
Dewey Conroy, vice president and COO of Pacific
Coast Avionics, shared Gregory's assessment and added,
"Our biggest challenge is the typical customer doesn't
have the patience to sit in the airplane and learn how
all the avionics integrate. Even after they learn enough
to fly home, they end up fudging their way through.
We've been dealing with this since the first hand-held
GPS units were the rage. We were always getting calls
from customers saying they couldn't get it to do this or
that. We'd ask if they tried reading the manual, and their
typical answer was, 'No I didn't.'"
"But that's not everyone," Gregory stated. "You
do have the top 10 percent of owners who have the
drive and put in the effort to study and learn to use the
equipment the right way."
Fortunately for the team at Sarasota Avionics, their
"typical" avionics customer falls in that upper 10 percent.
"Most of our customers are diligent pilots, so with
the way the technology has come about over the past
few years, most of the pilots who come in our shop
have already done an extensive amount of research and
homework," said Monica Gualandri, Sarasota's repair

station coordinator. "They have gotten information off
the internet and watched YouTube videos from people
who have the same equipment and have posted their
own 'how-to' videos. Also, most of our customers have
already gone to the avionics manufacturer's website and
downloaded a training app or simulator to practice. They
typically come in here knowing a good piece of what the
units can do."
Avionics training is like flight training
There's no arguing that today's advanced avionics are
complex, and customers need to realize that going in. Gone
are the days of just twisting the knobs on a new KX-155.
"Customers have to understand that learning to use
today's avionics needs to be done as a building-block
process," explained Greg Vail, avionics sales manager
for Flightstar Corp. "They have to start with a good,
basic understanding and then build on it from there.
It's just like when you learned to fly - you start with
learning how to safely taxi from the ramp to the runway
and build from there. It's the same with avionics.
"Honestly, I can take a pilot and have them flying
their new Garmin GTN in 15 minutes, because I will
only show them how to use the COM and GPS. Now,
that's only about 5 percent of what that unit can do, but
it's a starting point for them to grow their skills."
Another thing that helps pilots get familiar with
today's avionics faster than they may have done in
the past is that the manufacturers are making them
more intuitive for pilots to use. Back in the day, user
functionality was often the last thing manufacturers
considered with a new design - and I ought to know
- I started my career in 1979 writing pilot operating
