"With each new generation of
equipment, manufacturers are
making them more and more pilot
intuitive," Gregory said. "For
example, once you're familiar with
how things operate in the Garmin
world, it becomes a lot easier to
understand the complexities of
what's next."
"I also think that modeling
the functionality of today's
avionics more after top-tier
consumer electronics helps with
the faster learning," Conroy said.
"Touchscreen electronics like

iPhones and iPads have helped a
lot. To most people, seeing this
technology in their aircraft is a
natural progression. Now it's just
another tool.
"Of course, it also helps that the
avionics manufacturers are keeping
up with the times and have all builtin a 'get-out-of-jail-free' card in the
form of a Home button. If you get
confused or lost on a screen, you
press that button and you're back
on page one so you can start over."
Avionics shops' role in
avionics training
As you would expect, no two
avionics shops - at least of the four
we talked to for this story - handle
customer training the same way.

But the one thing they all have in
common is a heavy reliance on the
training offerings provided by the
various hardware manufacturers.
"We work hard to provide
the customer with all the digital
training tools that the manufacturers
offer today," Gregory said. "In the
Part 23 market, we primarily sell
Garmin avionics, so I know they
have good tools including iPad
and desktop trainer/simulators the
customer can download.
"Garmin also has an excellent
training call center that is staffed
by people who get paid to answer
customers' questions. I'm told that
everyone there is required to fly
Garmin-equipped airplanes so they
can answer a customer's most-
