"When you buy a new Garmin
GTN, we give you a CD tutorial
and there's an app the customer
can download," Gualandri said.
"Avidyne has the same tools for
training customers. Even the flight
simulators you can buy for your
computers have these new avionics
systems. With everything available,
pilots are more prepared than they
were five or 10 years ago."
But with the "typical" avionics
buyer being a bit older than the
typical consumer electronics
customer, many shops complement
the online offerings with some level
of one-on-one training.
"As our company policy, we

provide individualized training to
all our customers who want it,"
Gualandri said. "We start with an
hour's worth of familiarization
training in the customer's aircraft on
the ground. It helps to learn in the
same environment you are going to
be flying in.
"Then again, if the customer
wants it, we will provide an hour's
flight training in their aircraft. We
are fortunate to have two CFIs on
staff here, and there is at least one
experienced pilot at each of our other
locations. Obviously, some customers
want more and others don't want any.
It's not required as long as we are
comfortable with their skill level."
"We will spend anywhere from
one to three hours with the customer

depending on how sophisticated their
installation is, and that can include
some flight time," Conroy said.
"Once they see it actually working in
their aircraft, they realize it's not that
hard to get comfortable."
Another learning tool that all
the shops highly recommend to
customers are the various avionics
demo units in shop showrooms.
They are there for any customer to
practice button-pushing and knobtwisting to their heart's content.
Plus, the shop's sales and technical
representatives are always nearby to
demonstrate and explain. It's a great
training aid that too many customers
never think of using.
