Mike Bragg believes his company's success can be attributed, in part, to discovering the individualism of each customer.
"I don't believe every airplane, every customer, needs all-new all the time," he said.
In his early days at Bragg Avionics, Mike described himself
as the one who did the grunt work. He said, "I would get behind
the panels, doing installations, mounting antennas, and I got
fast at doing it."
After three years of work, Mike went to a technical college
to receive training in basic electronics. He said, "That helped
me understand our work and also how to troubleshoot." As the
business grew and more technicians were hired, he said, "I was
their boss, even though I was doing the same work they were."
By then, Mike said, "I figured out I had a knack for this
work. I liked the people and could talk to them. My dad was
getting older and slowing down with the physical aspect of the
job, and my granddad had retired in 1990." Mike then realized
something else about himself: He liked the selling part of the
business. He said, "I liked talking to people, finding new business, putting together estimates and a package for a customer
and presenting it to them."
In particular, he enjoys showing the customer their airplane
when a job is completed. "I show them how to use the equip-
ment and all the fun things they got," he said. "It's like when
a car salesman shows you your new car and all its features.
Customers are happy."
Mike's father retired two years ago, and Mike realized
that even though Bragg Avionics is a real family business, he
needed help to make it grow, so he hired an outside consultant.
Bragg Avionics employs six full-time technicians and three
administrative staff who do billing, accounts receivable, and
the FAA paperwork. The company works on single-engine
aircraft, light twins up to corporate jets and helicopters. In fact,
the sheriff's department bases its flight department with its four
helicopters at the airport and is a customer.
And then, there's Mike's wife, Cindy. "She's the backbone
of this place," he said. "She is the driving force behind all
improvements and all procedures, and she keeps the company
running on time, including me. If I mess up, I'm going to hear
about it."
