Cutter Aviation
celebrates 90
years in business
W
hen you've been in business for nine
decades - yes, 90 years - you know
a multitude of high-quality business practices are in
place. But if you knew the history of Cutter Aviation,
an Aircraft Electronics
Association member since
1964, you wouldn't be too
surprised that it's been serving
the general aviation industry for
exactly that long.
The repair station at the company's
Phoenix location serves as the longtime
AEA member, and what a success story it is.
So what exactly is working well for the repair station
and the entire organization at Cutter, a third-generation
family-owned business with more than 250 employees
working at seven locations in five states? We checked
in with Genaro Sanchez, director of marketing and
communications, to find out. Here's what we learned.
William P. Cutter started the company in 1928 when

he flew into Albuquerque as a traveling barnstormer,
met a girl, and knew he had to stay. He opened his
business under the name Cutter Flying Service.
Back in 1928, only a few months prior to the
beginning of the Great
Depression in the U.S., it was
rare to find an aircraft with
anything remotely similar to
the avionics products in service
today. But Cutter has grown in
avionics capabilities as the technology
has changed, supporting sales and service
for new aircraft rolling off the factory floors
for several years.
In the early years, Cutter Flying Service only offered
much-needed air charter to reach ranches, towns and
businesses scattered across New Mexico, Arizona
and Texas. Although times were difficult during the
Great Depression, Cutter Flying Service survived by
expanding to offer needed aircraft maintenance, line,
