Oh, how I wish we
could predict the future!

A

s I write this month's column, I have just
finished a week in Los Angeles where I
had the privilege of attending the second
annual Uber Elevate Summit. To summarize the summit
in one word: Wow! I'm not sure what I appreciated
more: the enthusiasm of the entire Uber team, which
is quite infectious; the creativity of its uberAIR vision
of urban air mobility; the scope and depth of Uber's
transportation tentacles; or the technology needed to
support this next generation of aviation.
But let me focus here on the uberAIR initiative.
First, the operational side is quite simple - an
on-demand intracity airline where the average flight
is less than a half-hour. That is where the simple part
ends; to make this happen and, more importantly,
making this a viable, profitable business is more
complicated and would be an article (if not a book)
by itself. This model would not have worked a decade
ago. In fact, this model may not have worked even five
years ago. And to be frank, it cannot work today! But
with the rapid advancements in technology, I believe it
can work in three to five years, which is the target for
demonstration flights.
From our industry's perspective, uberAIR needs a
unique aircraft. While the power (and pocketbook)

of Uber is the driving force for this next-generation
aircraft, the technologies that will support this aircraft
will be brought into mainstream aviation during the
next decade, as well.
First, for a few reasons, the aircraft needs to be
electric. While we have electric aircraft today, they

are few and far between. Except for Pipistrel's Alpha
Electro, electric aircraft are mostly demonstration
models. But the fundamental technology exists, and
the advancement in storage and charging systems
supports that, within three to five years, there may
be enough operational capability to make this type of
aircraft viable. What these new aircraft will need is a
whole new breed of "powerplant" mechanics - without
petroleum-based fuels; without internal combustion
engines; and without turbine engines. Indeed, the
