Certifications continue
CiES holds FAA supplemental type certification for its fuel
sender on most Cessna single-engine aircraft, all Cirrus models,
the Beech Bonanza, Debonair, Baron and T34 Mentor, most
Piper aircraft from the Tri-Pacer to the Navajo, GippsAero GA8
Airvan, Vulcanair P68, as well as a few others.
"The first time around with the AML, we addressed the
popular general aviation aircraft," Philiben said. "We waited on
some of the more-difficult aircraft such as the SOCATA TB20
series. That took a slightly different housing because they were
using French automotive senders.
"The Cessna TTX had a more-interesting, more-involved
fuel quantity system, as did the Piper Malibu/Malibu Mirage. In
most installations, the sender mounts to the outside of the fuel
tank. With the TTX and the Malibu Mirage, the factory sensors
are immersed - and powered inside the tank. In adapting our
sender, we had to over-engineer it, making sure that we had an
extremely robust wiring system. Essentially, we added a noninductive blocking resistor to the system so that if the wire were
to come loose, it couldn't create a spark in the fuel tank."
In addition to its fixed-wing STCs, the company recently
received approval for the Eurocopter AS350 as a component in

StandardAero's crash-resistant fuel tank.
"The A-Star helicopter has had a slate of accidents where
the fuel tank burst on crash," Philiben explained. "The people
survived the crash, but they didn't survive the fire. That was
recently the case of a young couple in the Grand Canyon. We
were approached by Robertson Fuel Systems, which builds
most of the military bullet- and crash-resistant fuel tanks, and
asked if we could build a system for the helicopter market."
CiES engineers are currently working on a fuel sender for
King Airs, Cessna Caravans and the de Havilland DHC-2
Beaver. For the King Airs, the company is focused on designing
a new circuit card to interface with the aircraft's existing gauges.
Along with the OEMs, aircraft service centers and owneroperators are turning to CiES' new fuel sensing technology
when installing new engine instrumentation, according to
Philiben.
"Whether it's an engine instrument system from JPI, Garmin
or Electronics International, all of them recommend that you
replace the fuel sensors before installation," he said. "One of
biggest issues that installers have is getting legacy fuel quantity
