Analog may rule in numbers, but glass options are shrinking six-pack dominance

t's a rare pilot these days who lacks some lust for
a glass cockpit. It's a rarer new aircraft delivered
with analog flight instruments.
Practically everything built these days, from light sport
aircraft to the top of the business-turbine line, comes out
of the factory with an all-glass, digital flight deck. And
little wonder.
These wonders of digital electronics and solidstate sensors provide a window to the world of flight
unmatched by even the finest of round-dial, so-called
"steam gauge" flight and navigation instruments dominant
in panels until late in the 20th century.
Thanks, in part, to the Federal Aviation
Administration's reformed view of approval options,
owners of type-approved aircraft have begun to enjoy
glass-panel options previously available only to owners
and builders of experimental, amateur-built aircraft - and

Pilots from across the spectrum welcome the changes,
as evidenced by the many moving their panels into the
glass-cockpit era. The advantages of digital panels over
analog are numerous, their benefits profound.
Innovation writ large
Thanks to the innovative minds in the avionics
industry, options abound to move to glass from analog in
virtually any aircraft flying. And the farther the move into
digital glass, the greater the depth of benefits - and the
greater the improvement in reliability.
