What makes this possible? Those avionics innovations
of recent years found a receptive FAA when companies
like Dynon and groups like the Experimental Aircraft
Association labored to open avenues for approving glasscockpit components - changes that made the systems
more affordable than any time in the past.
EAB aircraft owners and builders long ago learned to
embrace the wider latitude they enjoy in filling out their
instrument panels. The FAA's new approach brings much
of those benefits to the realm of factory-built certificated
aircraft. The more-relaxed approach obviates the need for
the imprint of a technical standard order, or TSO, to install
many coveted avionics systems in type-approved aircraft.
The options open to gaining approval for an avionics
package or product include earning parts manufacturing
approval for a piece of equipment, or submitting a typecertificate application showing the avionics as part of
the airplane so that when the FAA approves the plane its
systems similarly win approval at the same time.
The options available via the various paths continue to
grow, with one of the latest parts approvals announced as this
story came together in mid-March. More on that shortly.

Going glass:
The cons and pros of the investment
If pilots show most of their excitement about a single
aspect of taking a panel to digital glass from analog steamgauges, it's in the prospect of ditching the air-powered flight
instruments - more specifically, the troublesome air pump
that moves the air flowing over the paddles that drive the
mechanical, spinning-mass gyroscopes in the attitude indicator
and directional gyro, or gyro compass.
For example, at a recent gathering of pilots, one of them
told another of changes he made recently to the panel of his
vintage Cessna 185. The change? The installation of two
Garmin G5 systems in his panel. "Got rid of that problematic
vacuum pump in the process, and have more redundancy with
each G5 sporting its own standby battery," the 185 pilot said.
"While it wasn't cheap, given other work we did, it was the
first option to add glass that came in at an affordable price."
Now pilots of pressure-driven instruments sweat the
air-pump issue less than those flying behind suction-driven
instruments. Suction pumps have a reputation for failing more
