older-aircraft owners an affordable
entry into adding glass instruments to
their panels.
A few months later at EAA
AirVenture 2016, Garmin introduced
the G5 compact EFIS as either a
primary flight display or a directional
gyro/horizontal situation indicator
instrument, complete with an integral
standby battery option. Two of these
provides the aircraft owner with full
redundancy and replacements for
flight instruments and navigation
indicators.
And the options continue to grow.
Now it's on with Dynon
First announced as underway last
air-show season, the SkyView HDX
package put forth by Dynon received
its first STC for the system, produced
under FAA PMA.
The initial STC is an approved
model list covering a wide range of
Cessna 172 Skyhawks carrying one
of these with model suffixes: F, G, H,
I, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R and S.
The approved package covers
the full panel, including a Mode S
transponder, compliant ADS-B Out,
ADS-B In, and all autopilot functions
available with the addition of two
servos.
The package is approved for
day, night, VFR and IFR - and
the autopilot functions available
include flying routes and instrument
approaches when the Dynon PFD
is connected to an approved WAAS
GPS navigator.
Dynon, as previously promised,
priced the PMA-approved SkyView
HDX package identically to the same
equipment sold for the EAB market.
The only difference in cost comes
down to the STC and installation costs.
Expect more to come
From conversations with avionics
shops and OEMs, options available

under these alternative processes
will continue, as established players
expand their range of offerings and
other companies tailoring to the EAB
market invest in the processes and
paperwork necessary to win PMA
and STC approvals so they, too, can
compete in the type-approved segment
of general aviation.
Dynon, which has long been a
favorite of aircraft homebuilders,
is now winning customers with
certificated aircraft. As the company
expands the AML STC, look for
the aircraft approved to move into
multiengine aircraft, like the Beech
Baron with a three-screen HDX
shown at AirVenture 2017.
Conversely, Garmin, which started
out offering uncertified handheld GPS
navigators expanded to offer the full

range of avionics for piston, turboprop
and jet aircraft - before turning back
toward the experimental market with
the G5.
The declining use of spinningmass gyros is already impacting
replacement and overhaul costs.
As the cost for maintaining those
and other analog flight instruments
continues to increase, the step up to
these new glass options will steadily
narrow.
With retrofit sales and work
accounting for the majority of avionics
sales last year, and with the addition
of more affordable glass-cockpit
options, look for the retrofit business
to continue its dominance in avionics
sales - at least until well after the Jan.
1, 2020, deadline for complying with
the FAA's ADS-B Out mandate. q
