What is the relationship
between Southern
Avionics & Interiors and
Continental Motors?

Continental Motors was founded in
1904, and since then, has provided general
aviation with power solutions. It became
evident to us that when aircraft owners
change their engines, they want additional
work on their airplanes. With new avionics
on the market, we had more requests from
clients to send them to the right avionics
shop while they had their engine installed at
our factory MRO center. We had a good fit
with a shop based in Mobile, Alabama, and
we acquired it.

outhern Avionics & Interiors
has served the Gulf Coast
for more than 30 years and
employs technicians who are experts in
troubleshooting, repair and installation,
offering a wide portfolio of services under
one roof. Its factory-trained specialists work
with every major avionics brand, including
ADS-B testing, compliance and service,
VFR/IFR certification, component repair
and software updates. From the same site,
the company also offers paint and powder
coating, custom CNC panel fabrication and
complete custom interior refurbishment.
Recently, Avionics News spoke with
Emmanuel Davidson to learn more about
his work and life away from the office.

I work for Continental Motors engines,
but also our turbine MRO, United Turbine in
Miami; Southern Avionics & Interiors; and
Continental Motors Services, our MRO that
does overhauls for Continental and Lycoming
engines. That's in the United States, but we
also have operations in Europe - a factory
in Germany that produces the majority of
our Jet A-burning engines and parts for
avgas engines. We have 200 people in our
factory in Germany and a sales and service
operation in Beijing.

What's a typical
day for you?

I am based between Mobile half the
time and spend the other half either in
Germany or in Beijing. I also have a base
in Paris. I typically work with China early in
the morning and continue my day with U.S.
operations. We're in a world with modern
communications, so I can organize my day
across time zones. A few years ago, it was

strange, but no more. One of the goals is to
have a customer focus in all the geographies
where our products are used.

What do you like best
about your job?
We have a direct relationship
with our users and always want
to better understand what
our users and customers are
requiring. I'm passionate about
general aviation - to be in close
contact with users and translate
research to what the company
is going to do in the future
to better answer customer
requirements.

You say you're passionate
about general aviation.
Are you a pilot?

I am a commercial pilot with an
instrument rating, seaplane rating, glider
rating. I also fly ultralights and shiftweights,
although I don't do that much anymore. I
own a Cessna 182.

How do you use your
airplane?

We are a flying family. We're not
passionate about cars, but we think of
the 182 as our SUV. When the weekend
comes or a holiday comes, we'll be in
the airplane. Our airplane is the best
transportation to get us to a place where
we can rent a boat. My wife is a pilot
also, and my youngest daughter, Eileen, is
14 and has 1,300 hours in her "essential
crewmember" logbook.
