SARSAT Beacon
Accidental Activation
Prevention Initiative
Help SARSAT prevent 406 MHz ELT false alerts, which
is a non-distress activation of a 406 MHz emergency beacon
(ELT, PLB, or EPIRB). It can be caused by accidental
activation during testing, mishandling, improper installation,
or unfamiliarity with beacon operation.
In fact, 8,786 false alerts were generated by ELTs in the U.S.
in 2017. Always conduct self-tests and annual tests according
to the manufacturer's instructions for your ELT. Each year, the
majority of 406 MHz ELT false alerts occur during testing and
maintenance.
If you realize you have accidentally activated your beacon,
call the U.S. Air Force Rescue Coordination Center at 1-800851-3051 or the nearest FAA Air Traffic facility with your
beacon's hex ID ready to cancel the false alert. This helps
protect search and rescue personnel who would otherwise be
out looking during an actual emergency. To learn more, visit

AEA to host ASTM
F46 Aerospace
Personnel Meeting

The AEA will play host to the next ASTM F46 Aerospace
Personnel committee meeting, June 6-7, at its Dan Derby Center
for Professional Development in Lee's Summit, Missouri.
Join fellow AEA members and industry subject-matter experts
in defining the knowledge and skill requirements for avionics
technicians. Mike Adamson, AEA vice president of member
programs and education, is a member of the committee and
serves as its recording secretary.
More than 12,000 ASTM standards operate globally. Working
across borders, disciplines and industries, ASTM International
harnesses the expertise of more than 30,000 members to create
consensus and improve performance in manufacturing and materials, products and processes, systems and services.
All ASTM committee meetings are open to ASTM members
and non-members. Advance registration is required and can be

Aviation STEM
curriculum
takes off

In an ongoing industry-wide effort to
address a growing demand for aviation jobs,
the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association
recently announced that more than 70 schools
will implement its high school aviation science,
technology, engineering and mathematics
curriculum in the 2018-19 school year. The
association's STEM curriculum offers students
four-year aviation study options aligned with
rigorous math and science standards used in
many states.
According to AOPA, the courses are part of
three career and technical education pathways:
pilot; unmanned aircraft systems (drones);
and aerospace engineering. Each year, AOPA
will release subsequent courses until all four
high school grade levels of the curriculum are
complete. In addition to implementing the ninthgrade curriculum in the 2018-19 school year, 25
schools will be testing the 10th-grade curriculum.
The curriculum will be provided to schools at no
cost.
During the past year, AOPA tested the ninthgrade curriculum in nearly 30 schools with more
than 700 students, before unveiling the program.
The courses are aligned with Next Generation
Science Standards and Common Core State
Standards for Mathematics and includes all the
resources teachers will need.
Before implementing the curriculum, teachers
are required to participate in a three-day
professional development workshop at AOPA
headquarters in Frederick, Maryland, to gain
a deeper understanding of the materials, learn
about available resources, and network with other
aviation educators.
According to AOPA, 45 percent of students
currently testing the ninth grade STEM
curriculum are in underrepresented groups, and 22
percent of students are female.
