Maintenance placards and airworthiness was the
monthly safety topic for February 2018. The GAJSC
identified improper or inadequate return to service
procedures as the cause of several fatal accidents and
wrote a safety enhancement encouraging the use of
lockout/tagout methods to advise pilots of unairworthy
conditions. As part of this initiative, the FAA produced
Maintenance Placards, a video presentation available on
YouTube.
The monthly safety focus of April 2018 was smart
cockpit technology, after the GAJSC determined such
technology, including automated checklists for operations,
predictive aircraft performance and performance
monitoring, may reduce the number of system/component
failure-related GA accidents. The GAJSC encouraged the
use of ADS-B, electronic ignition and engine control and

In late 2018, the GAJSC will once again consult
available accident data and determine the group's next task.
"The GAJSC might not be a very well-known
organization within the GA community, but it is very
important to the industry," Burnside said. "It's important
that organizations like the AEA, the FAA and individual
industry representatives continue to contribute time and
resources to the initiative."
"At this time, the current fatal accident rate in GA
is below the target goal for 2018," Fraser added. "Of
course, we can't determine if the GAJSC's work is
causal in that reduction, but the trend is promising."
