ittle to nothing in aviation remains static
for long, though the duration of "long"
remains amorphous. As with many disruptive
technological changes, an overlap always exists as the
legacy technology, material or technique lingers, usually
for years, sometimes decades.
A few months before Boeing's 787 Dreamliner entered
service in 2011, company flight-test staff gave tours of
a certification example the planemaker displayed at Air
Venture 2011 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Technological advances awaited at virtually every turn.
The most-talked about: Boeing's extensive use of
composites in load-bearing roles of the fuselage, wings
and more. Composites make up 50 percent of the airliner.
Boeing broke ground in composites use in transportcategory aircraft, trailing military aircraft, experimental
and certificated general aviation aircraft by decades, and
the Airbus A380 by a few years.
The engines themselves sport advances in pressure
ratios, bypass ratios, weight, a new concept in electrical

generation and a new approach to pressurization.
The electrical system relies on a novel dual-use
electrical power generation system that doubles as the
engine-start system. Then there's the electrical system
itself, which employs high-tech lithium-ion batteries and
new technology in the power-distribution and management
roles.
Few of the 787's many advances are apparent. One
exception: the flight deck, itself a wonder in high
technology. Filling the expansive panel sit five Rockwell
Collins 15.1-inch integrated liquid-crystal displays, serving
as the information and control center of the aircraft.
The use of multiple displays to monitor, manage and
control the avionics and other aircraft systems is today's
standard panel for everything from piston singles to giant
airliners like this.
Another major departure into new tech stands out for
what you don't see in a cockpit seemingly more spacious
and airy than that of the Dreamliner's cousin, the widebody 777.
