Among the contributions to weight reduction are the
reduced weight and costs of the ECB packages compared
to the costs and weight of individual breakers. But
the ECBs also contribute in other areas, for example,
eliminating multiple electromechanical devices,
contactors, switches and electromechanical relays.
Along with these reductions, the ECBs also reduce
the amount of wiring needed, which brings a parallel
reduction in production labor.
The ECB package, like the Astronics CorePower
1448, also takes up less space while delivering greater
functionality and flexibility. Astronics' new 28-volt
product provides 24 channels of circuit protection in a
package small enough to mount almost anywhere. That
increases the ability of mounting the package close to
components, allowing shorter runs of the heavy gauge
wire between the component and the ECB unit.
Each circuit in the compact Astronics ECB package is a
fully contained component, which users can individually
address through panel control. This allows maintenance
and customers control over the system's configuration.
Monitoring and control of the systems with ECBs
occurs through avionics displays and control panels.
ECBs also exist for experimental-aircraft applications,
as all-in-one units controlling multiple circuits as well as
in the familiar format for aircraft breakers. The protection
levels for these individual breakers are set at the factory
and not individually configurable.
The multiple-ECB models available, however, work
much like those described above, through panel displays
or controllers.
How they work
Mechanical circuit breakers combine thermal and
magnetic trips to protect the circuits to which they're
wired. The thermal protection employs a time delay so
that short current peaks inherent to some equipment
don't trip the breaker. Magnetic protection breakers trip
instantly to protect against shorts and grounds burning
out components. To give this some perspective, a 20amp breaker may take a few seconds to trip when current
hits 30 amps; conversely, a short or ground may result
