Michael Bay of Depot Avionics

Recently, Avionics News spoke with
Michael Bay to learn more about his
work and life outside the airport.

Growing up, did you have
an interest in electronics
and aviation?
I grew up in Alaska and was into
the outdoors. My father was into
electronics, but my mother and
stepfather owned an avionics shop
in Alaska, so I was always around
airplanes, always around general
aviation. I started working full time
for my stepfather who had started
a one-man shop in Conroe, north
of Houston. I was the only other
employee, and we grew from there
into a big business.

epot Avionics Inc. has
been in business for
more than 40 years in
various locations in Colorado and
New Mexico. The company works
on anything from an ultralight to
the occasional Citation. Located
in Alamosa, Colorado, Depot Avionics
calls itself "the friendliest avionics
shop for Colorado, New Mexico,
Arizona, Utah, Kansas and Texas
pilots." As an FAA repair station,
Depot Avionics both installs new
avionics and repairs old equipment.

How long did you
work there?
I worked there for 16 years. I
was the only technician, and then I
managed installations, did instrument
panel design and fabrication.

Why did you leave?
Having grown up in Alaska, I knew
Houston wasn't for me. I had spent
time in Colorado and sent a resume to
a shop in Alamosa, Colorado, and was
called back the next morning. That was
in 2012. I started as an installer and
did all the larger installations, panel
fabrications and PFDs. I keep everyone
motivated and on task. I do all the panel
design and fabrication, so I stay busy.

What kind of airplanes
do you service?
We work on GA airplanes
up to light twins, with a few
ultralights that are used in aerial
photography. Basically, we
work on single-engine Cessnas
up to the 421, Conquests and
sometimes King Airs.

Do you have a favorite
airplane to service?
I have a lot of them. In Texas, I had
the opportunity to work on warbirds
from the Lone Star Flight Museum - a
B-17 and a B-25. We did a massive
audio system in the B-17 since the
museum uses it for rides and it is used
in movies.

What's a typical
day for you?
I usually get here a couple of hours
before we open, between 5 and 6 a.m.
I organize what I'm supposed to do.
When the guys get here, I assist them
moving in the right direction and make
sure all the details are getting done.

Do you like managing
people?
I enjoy it. My father has done that
for years; he's good at it. He's the
kind of person who has never met a
stranger. As I've gotten older, I rely
on him for advice. His philosophy
is your job as a manager is to make
