ike many aircraft owners, "Our ADS-B plans were to wait as long
as possible until the options and prices got better," said Bradley
Spatz, who with a partner flies a 2000 Cessna 182S. Based in
Gainesville, Florida, Spatz conducted his ADS-B research with one-day
visits to Sun 'n Fun, held each year just down the road in Lakeland. As the
partners got closer to making a decision, Spatz made his first pilgrimage to
Oshkosh, Wisconsin, for EAA AirVenture 2017.
Spending the week "really helped" his investigation of the current
ADS-B solutions because he had time to visit with the manufacturers,
attend a multitude of seminars, catalog their features and their show
specials, and ask many questions. While exploring the AirVenture exhibit
hangars, Spatz discovered the Aircraft Electronics Association booth in
hangar B and entered its $1,000 ADS-B drawing.
When the AEA drew his name on the show's first day, "There was no
need to wait anymore," Spatz said. With his good luck, the AEA incentive
"pulled the trigger," he added. "The Lynx NGT-9000 was kind of a splurge,
but it was enabled by the AEA award and assisted by the FAA ($500 ADSB) rebate and L3's show specials."
They wanted more than just compliance with the ADS-B mandate, Spatz
said. "We wanted to leverage the benefits of ADS-B and make the most of
the traffic and weather," ADS-B In's Traffic Information Service-Broadcast
and Flight Information Service-Broadcast. "I've been using a Stratus
ADS-B In receiver and a tablet, but it's nice to have those basic capabilities
