right there in the panel without having to bring anything
else," he said. "It's just there, so spending the extra grand to
do that with the Lynx was helpful, and it has Wi-Fi, so we
can use it with the tablet."
Attending L3's AirVenture seminars "got us software
enablement for some additional features," like audio traffic
alerts. "It has really good filtering, and I rarely get nuisance
alerts. If you hear it, traffic is nearby." In his early 50s, Spatz
said he was a semiretired IT/telecom executive who now does
some work as a data scientist at the University of Florida.
He's been flying for 20 years but has had a lifetime interest
in aviation. "I'd been a sky diver and instructor, so I always
spent a lot of time climbing around airplanes and falling off
them before I took the time to learn how to fly them."
Mac Avionics of Lakeland, Florida, installed the Lynx in
August 2017, shortly after Spatz returned from Wisconsin.
The partners considered adding a WAAS/GPS navigator to
the work order, "but they are just so incredibly expensive,"
Spatz said, "and we didn't need it" because the Lynx is a
stand-alone unit that incorporates its own WAAS position
source.
Their steam-gauge Cessna 182 has "an IFR GPS, a
BendixKing KLN 94" in its tall BendixKing stack that

includes a CAP 140 autopilot, Spatz noted. "The difference
between shooting an LNAV instrument approach versus an
LPV just isn't impactful to the flying we're doing. We go to
the Bahamas a lot, and we have a house in Tennessee, and
sometimes to Washington, D.C. I got the training to fly into
the big GA airports there, and we have some friends near
College Park."
To include the Lynx's touchscreen to the pilot's visual
scan, Don Ruhl of Mac Avionics recommended its
installation near the top of the avionics stack, so the pilot's
eyes wouldn't have to make a drastic detour to the bottom of
the stack, where the transponder it replaced typically resides.
"That is the weirdest thing" with the Lynx's installation,
Ruhl said. "I've been in the business for 30 years and always
put the transponder as far away as you can get it because
you don't use it that often. Now, if it is the NGT-9000, you
want the display right up top in your field of view."
As a stand-alone unit, Ruhl said, there are no integration
problems, and it communicates with all the popular tablet
electronic flight bag apps through Wi-Fi. "The only things
we see a lot of are antennas and coax cables that aren't
