"I think L3 spent a lot of time on
the traffic filter to get the right balance, to tell you what you need to
know without it chirping at you all
the time," Spatz said. "The weather
is OK. We're XM weather subscribers, so that sets a high bar. We have
(Garmin 396) on the yoke, and that is
still a lot better than what is depicted
or maybe even available on ADS-B
In. The weather sources are expanding
with ADS-B, and I'm tracking that,
but the depiction is not great."
Understanding that the Lynx can
only display the flight information
broadcast, Spatz wonders if L3 might
be able to animate NexRad radar.
"Right now, it is static," he said. "It
would be nice to animate the last three
to five images so you can see the
trends. XM Weather on our old Garmin
396 does that, and it is really nice."
The installation was trouble free,
Spatz said, and "I did the ADS-B
verification flight when I picked up
the airplane; I got an email from
the FAA that evening saying that
everything was cool." Operating the
user-friendly Lynx is straightforward,
he said, and its similar app gave his
partner the hands-on experience he
needed to fly it. Spatz does "keep the
(flight manual) supplement open to
the page that explains the 12 different
screen icons" or traffic symbols that
identify airborne and ground targets,
their proximity, and advisory status.
"We've been very pleased with
the Lynx NGT-9000, especially
the TIS-B traffic, and we really
appreciate the AEA drawing," Spatz
said. "We feel really lucky," and it
was one of many highlights of his
inaugural AirVenture pilgrimage
and camping in the North 40. "The
best things were the people; all of
them. Everyone is there because
they love aviation, and everyone
has an interesting story, like the
B-52 pilot who sat next to me at
lunch one day." q
