Salt Lake Community
College introduces
advanced avionics program
Avionics News recently spoke with Shaun Anderson, assistant professor and instructor for aviation maintenance and
avionics at Salt Lake Community College, to learn how the institution is meeting the need to educate the next generation
of avionics technicians.

Avionics News: Please tell us about your
aviation and avionics programs.
Anderson: We started our airframe and powerplant
program about 35 years ago and added an avionics
program in 2014. Our new advanced avionics program
was introduced last year.
We upgraded the program
because our industry advisory
board, which is made up of
representatives from Duncan
Aviation, SkyWest Airlines,
Cornerstone Aviation, Delta
Air Lines, Intermountain Life
Flight and the FAA, told us we needed to offer more
new-generation avionics options for the A&P program
students.
In particular, they felt we needed more specialized
classes to teach electronics troubleshooting skills. We
have also added a course for students to obtain their

FCC General Radio Operator License. 
We have set up a certificate of proficiency for
this new program. It follows the Aircraft Electronics
Technician format for getting that certificate and
endorsements. We expect most of our program's
students to come from our current
A&P program. We also have
some enrollees who already have
their A&P licenses and some
experience and are looking for
more advanced avionics training
to troubleshoot glass panels.
We also have a couple of
students who just want the avionics knowledge. Right
now, we see our program geared more toward a line
avionics technician, because there is currently not
enough specific training in our program for a bench
technician.
We have had a couple of students who have taken
