some of the classes and tell us the program has helped
them get a specific job they applied for. That's a good
starting point.
in the military, so we feel that most of our current and
future students will want the A&P and the AET training
combined.
Avionics News: Where do you see your program
in five years?
Anderson: It is in its infancy right now, but if we
get more companies to give preference to hiring people
with this experience, it will help our program continue
to grow and train avionics technicians as well as boost
other similar programs nationwide. Our goal is to
provide employers with properly trained employees.
Avionics News: How are you doing things
differently to keep up with technological advancements?
What is new and exciting in your curriculum?
Anderson: We have added many sophisticated
trainers and testing units like the IFR 4000, IFR 6000,
and pitot-static tester units to our labs. Much of the
equipment that is used for avionics program is also used
in the A&P program, so it has helped get more value out
of the investment.
Avionics News: How are you preparing students
to become technicians and satisfying the increasing
demand of the advanced technology fields in avionics,
unmanned aircraft systems and aircraft electronics?
Anderson: Our current A&P curriculum does not
allow enough time to spend on advanced avionics, so
this specialized program will greatly increase their skill
set needed to troubleshoot the advanced digital avionics
found on today's airliners and corporate aircraft.
There are not a lot of avionics technicians employed
in our area who do not also have A&P or experience
Avionics News: How is your program set up?
Part 147 with avionics, stand-alone avionics, degree
program, certificate program?
Anderson: We currently offer a certificate of
proficiency that, in the case of our A&P students, will
greatly enhance their overall credentials. As I mentioned
earlier, the program follows the AET format and
includes the FCC GROL license. The five classes in the
