In Memory: Pat

Napolitano

Pat Napolitano, a longtime employee of Mid-Continent
Instruments and Avionics, passed away in an airplane
accident Friday, May 25, 2018, south of Santa Fe, New
Mexico. He was 53 years old.
The aircraft involved was a Beechcraft Staggerwing,
owned by the company.
An avid pilot with a warm and outgoing personality, he
was a regular attendee at various AEA events, including
the annual AEA International Convention & Trade Show,
and will be greatly missed. q

AEA Technology
Incubator set
for Aug. 16

Are you an inventor always coming up with something new;
the vendor marketing the next great invention; the customer
who designed a solution but doesn't know the next step?
The AEA Technology Incubator, set for Aug. 16, 2018, at the
AEA's international headquarters in Lee's Summit, Missouri, is
designed to demystify the path forward to producing parts for
certified aircraft with a focus on producing these parts under
the FAA oversight.
The AEA Technology Incubator will include presentations
and discussions focused on understanding the FAA regulatory
structure, as well as the Part 23 and production regulations,
guidance and policies. In addition, the forum will offer ample
opportunity to interact with the association staff, FAA personnel and other attendees.

FAA Administrator
discusses ADS-B
mandate and shop
capacity with AEA
On June 8, Aircraft Electronics
Association President Paula Derks
met with the Federal Aviation
Administration's acting Administrator,
Dan Elwell. Derks was accompanied by
AEA Chairman of the Board David Loso,
along with Ric Peri, AEA vice president
of government and industry affairs.
Discussion topics during the meeting
included the upcoming ADS-B mandate
and shop capacity to perform the
thousands of installations still needed
to meet the Jan. 1, 2020, deadline.
Administrator Elwell stated again that
the mandate will stick; there will be no
extensions. The Part 23 rewrite also was
discussed and how it is contributing
to the streamlining of certifying new
avionics products.
Peri stressed the need for the FAA
to encourage and support its avionics
safety inspectors to attend training
events offered by the AEA in an effort to
educate and inform the inspectors about
advancing technologies. q
