ADS-B In weather
The following information is from the
Federal Aviation Administration ADS-B
frequently asked questions.
This month's FAQ will include two
related weather questions and answers
from the FAA's ADS-B In website.
Question 1: I have traffic and weather
advisory information now. How are FAA
broadcast services different from these?
Answer: The main difference is that
ADS-B In broadcast services do not
require subscription or usage fees. If you
choose to equip, ADS-B traffic, weather
and aeronautical information services are
available to you free of charge.
Question 2: ADS-B In allows operators to

Airline traffic continues to rise around the world and
with it the technology to track, monitor and manage the
aircraft movements. The North Atlantic and European
airspace are at the forefront of this growth leading to
continuing changes to the air traffic management plans.

Answer: Yes. ADS-B's Flight Information
Services-Broadcast provides all the
information you would get with an XM
basic subscription, and more. In fact, at
no subscription cost to the user, the ADS-B
FIS-B product today is comparable to the
mid-to-high-level XM subscription. The FAA
currently is discussing with the vendor the
possibility of adding even more "no-cost"
products to the FIS-B service, such as:
*	 Lightning.
*	 Turbulence NOWcast.
*	 Icing NOWcast.
*	 Cloud Tops.
*	 One-minute AWOS - uplinked every
10 minutes.

The requirements to operate in this airspace are becoming more controlled by international consensus rather than
regulation. If an operator wants to take advantage of efficient routing, it needs to equip the aircraft accordingly and
develop procedures.
The TCCA has not yet stepped into the regulatory
process for performance-based navigation completely.
However, from an airline operations standpoint, the
Canadian regulations require the operators to have
approved procedures. To this end, the TCCA has recently
issued guidance on obtaining approval for Required
Communications Performance 240 and Required
