eing an avionics shop owner is not an easy task.
There are so many things to think about and
plan for and not enough time to do it all. For
most, one area of planning that always seems to get put on
the proverbial "back burner" until it's too late is what to do
when a major storm strikes.
Unfortunately, that issue was put on full display during
last year's hurricane season. Avionics shops in the Caribbean,
Florida and Texas were suddenly faced with emergencies many
weren't ready for.
It's not only hurricanes that cause problems.
Just this past April, the 30,000-square-foot Jet
Linx hangar at Houston's William P. Hobby
Airport was literally flattened - along with
business jets worth millions of dollars - by a
sudden microburst. Ready or not, there was no
way to see that one coming.
But whether you have days to plan for a
storm to hit, the bottom line is after the storm
passes, you're left with picking up the pieces,
however big they are.
Because it is now the 2018 hurricane season
and last year's storms are still on our minds,
Avionics News felt the time was right to learn what
avionics shop owners can do to prepare for big
storms in advance.
Avionics shops and hurricane prep
If you own an avionics shop or business located
within 100 miles or so of the Gulf or Atlantic
Coasts, you need to take hurricane preparation
seriously. And the key word is preparation. Take
it from someone who has spent his life in Florida,
you don't want to wait until Jim Cantore from The
Weather Channel is in town to prepare.
"Since we are based in southwestern Florida, we prepare
our offices and hangar for hurricanes and tropical storms in the
same fashion we do with our own personal property," explained
Monica Gualandri, repair station coordinator for Sarasota
Avionics. "It's the common-sense things like paying attention
to the forecast and preparing far in advance - securing outdoor
items and bringing what you can inside.
"As for the aircraft themselves, the first line of defense is to
get them out of harm's way if we can. If they're flyable, that's
our first choice. If not, we do the best we can to secure them in
our hangar and pray for the best."
Gualandri also said that Sarasota Avionics proactively
checks with each aircraft owner to verify that their insurance
coverage is current.
"We try to keep them as informed as possible about the
situation," she said. "If they don't have coverage, well,

there's not much we can do about it beyond what our normal
hangarkeeper policy covers."
Brian Redondo, satellite manager for Duncan Aviation's
facility at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, shared Gualandri's
thoughts and stressed the need for pre-storm preparation.
"Last time, we stacked the hanger with any aircraft that
were not flyable and had their owners sign wavers in case of
any damage," he said. "We wrapped all of our computers,
test equipment and laptops in plastic bags and moved them
to higher ground.

"You have to verify that the hangar door
is designed to handle the wind loads of the area you are in.
Also, you have to make sure it has the proper latches and
frames to support the door in those winds.

"All of our computer information is already backed
up off-site, so that is covered. Once all that is done, we
secure the hangars, lock the doors and leave. It's nothing
different than we have done in the past."
One of the things on Duncan Aviation's side when it
comes to major storm protection is the fact that its hangars
at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport are relatively new.
"We have been in our new location here for about three
years," Redondo said. "It is one of the newer hangars on
the field."
Of course, if you're familiar with construction in Florida,
being new may not mean being better. Many buildings that were
constructed 60-plus years ago have stood the worst of what
nature can throw at them.
