"If you lose the hangar door, you may end up losing the
entire hangar," stated Mike Schweiss, owner of Schweiss
Doors. "You have to verify that the hangar door is designed
to handle the wind loads of the area you are in. Also, you
have to make sure it has the proper latches and frames to
support the door in those winds.
"You also want to make sure it has properly designed and
installed wind pins. They are key to supporting the door and
frame during a storm."
As you might expect, multileaf, crossover doors are
the least prone to damage from high winds because they
aren't hanging out in the air. Outrigger, hydraulic and
bifold style doors are all fine solutions, but are also more
affected by high winds.
Other than that, Schweiss shared other insights when
it comes to door types and designs and how they react in
high winds.
"Hydraulic doors hang straight out off the end of the
building, and when they are open, they can act like a big
wing," he said. "Sure, the door may withstand the winds,

but will the building's structure be able to support the door?
"A bifold door folds in half when it's raised so there's less
surface structure for the wind to affect, which means there
is less stress on the building. The bottom line is, when you
experience any high winds, the best action is to close and
latch all the doors."
But what kind of door qualifies for an insurance
discount? That depends on the area of the country you
are located in and your particular insurance carrier's
requirements. Everyone takes for granted that the door you
currently have meets code.
Even if you don't own the hangar, there may be a case
where you can work with the building's owner and your
insurance carrier to work out a deal to upgrade to a more
structurally sound unit.
"If you're working with a knowledgable broker, they
can always make the case with your carrier about the
benefits of this type of improvement," Averill said. "You
want a broker who knows your business and will go to bat
for your company." q
