It is important that the students get
hands-on experience as early as
possible during their training. You
can talk about something all day,
but when you put your hands on it,
you really begin to understand it.
So, in their second year, using basic
equipment such as oscilloscopes,
function generators and multimeters
becomes second nature."
On aircraft system trainers,
Mullins introduces faults with a flip
of a switch, and steps back to let
students practice identifying and
locating the cause of the fault.
"It's like having an aircraft in
the classroom or lab, but it's much
easier to access the components,"
Mullins said. "This AeroTrain Corp.
trainer has general aviation aircraft
legacy avionics with GPS."
During the course of the avionics
program, students learn to test a
variety of systems, on the bench
and in aircraft, including Mode S
transponders, audio panels, VOR
and DME indicators, autopilots
and weather radar systems. On the
flight line, the school offers avionics
training on a variety of aircraft,

including three Beechcraft C-12
Huron twin-engine turboprops, four
Aero Commander light piston-twins,
a Cessna 172, three Cessna 152s,
three Cessna 150s, two Bell OH-58
Kiowa helicopters, and a Bell UH1H Iroquois helicopter.
"In designing aircraft today,
engineers start with a computer and
build an aircraft around it," Mullins
said. "The total number of black
boxes in modern aircraft today is
just astounding. That's why avionics
students need to also learn a great
deal about the entire process of
microprocessors, which also helps
them understand the data bus better.
At the Alabama Aviation Center,
students learn basic Hex Code by
programming a microprocessor to
do many functions, even play music
from ones and zeros."
Altogether, the four Alabama
Aviation College campuses in
Ozark, Albertville, Decatur and
Andalusia, train some 255 aviation
maintenance and avionics students
every semester.
"For me, the best part of being a
part of the college system is seeing
people who come here with little or
no skill, leave here and obtain good
paying jobs," Mullins said. q
