Working solo
Beating employee loneliness to improve your shop's productivity
I
t can be lonely at the top. You may have days when you
know no one else can truly appreciate the intricacies of
running your shop, keeping your team on task and productive, and wearing the proverbial bullseye on your back.
Sure, that comes with the boss territory. Still, sometimes,
having a peer to lean on would make a world of difference.
But just so you know, it can also be lonely in the middle
and bottom, too.
Right now, there's a good chance you have an employee or
several on the outside looking at the in-group with yearning
to belong. Unattached from workplace cliques, they're adrift,

unconnected and eating lunch alone. If you haven't noticed it
yet, you will when their work and motivation start to suffer.
For them, having anyone to lean on would make a world of
human difference.
According to folks who measure these kinds of things,
workplace loneliness is practically an epidemic. Whether
you're already seeing that at your shop or not, the big-picture
message is the same: Warm work relationships are important
to employee well-being and happiness. Yet for some people,
those connections never fair better than tepid at best. In many
cases, that's because forming bonds is hard, even in the best
of times. In a competitive, aloof, mind-your-own-business
environment, it can be downright impossible.
Either way, this is something that should be on your radar
because those relationships are crucial to workplace wellness.
According to recent studies, loneliness costs U.S. employers
billions of dollars in burnout, health care costs and lost productivity. Those are costs that affect your bottom line, and for
all of these reasons, you may want to think through how loneliness might be affecting your shop so you can do something
to fix it.
The antidote is simple, on paper, at least: Promote a shop
culture that values employee experience, workplace connection and social interaction. To do that, you should consider
what causes employee isolation, how it might be affecting
your business today, and what you can do to transform.
Because we all spend almost one-third of our lives on the job,
and without the chance to connect with the people around us,
we may end up spending a lot of time going solo.
