New Zealand's NMIT creates
world-ready graduates

ew Zealand's South Island is renowned for its
beautiful landscapes - a mix of mountains and
valleys, forests and glaciers. The pace is slower
here than on the North Island where about half the country's
population lives near the bustling, multicultural city of
Auckland.
At the top end of this quiet island, students study aviation
maintenance at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of
Technology. Located on New Zealand
Air Force Base Woodbourne, the
government-owned school offers
several aviation-focused programs,
including a two-year certificate in
aeronautical engineering.
"It's effectively a two-year A&P
course with a seven-week avionics
introduction course," said James Gropp, deputy head of the
Department for Trades, Engineering and Aviation. "The
program is 75 percent hands-on training and 25 percent
classroom study."
For the last 10 weeks of the program, students work in a
mock-up of a real-world maintenance hangar, performing
typical inspections, maintenance and repairs.
"It's the culmination of all their training," Gropp said.
"It's as close as we can get to realistic and still be training.
From day one, our mantra is work- and world-ready so that

when students leave here they can go into an employer's
business and produce billable work. That's the goal and our
whole focus."
New Zealand's Tertiary Education Commission funds about
two-thirds of each student's education. Students can offset
the remaining third with scholarships or government-funded,
interest-free loans, which are automatically paid back in
installments after they reach a specific income threshold.
"The whole purpose is to encourage
people to receive training, qualifications
and degrees in areas that are needed
in New Zealand," explained Gropp,
a former U.S. Air Force aircraft
maintenance flight superintendent and
an A&P mechanic.
In 2017, NMIT trained some 170
aviation maintenance students on campus and another 130
online. The school caps the number of new on-campus
students to 18 per enrollment cycle, with two enrollments per
year.
"We're New Zealand's first Part 147 maintenance training
organization," Gropp said. "It's a competitive program to get
into and includes a formal interview, aptitude assessment tests
and other assessments."
In New Zealand, aircraft engineers are required to accrue
five years of experience in addition to passing the Civil
