In 2010, NMIT opened its $1.2 million (NZD) aviation maintenance training hangar. It houses more than $8 million (NZD) in training aids and equipment
for students to practice their skills.

However, formal training programs such as NMIT's reduce
the experience requirement by a year.
"Our two-year program is a fast track to licensing, and it's
pretty intense," Gropp said. "We cover electrical, instruments,
airframe, structures, engines, hydraulics, wheels, and more -
the whole aircraft holistically - in just two years."
In addition to the aeronautical engineering program, NMIT
provides mechanical engineering, fabrication, welding and
machining, and systems training for several aviation industry
partners. For aircraft engineers who are ready to take their
New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority exams, NMIT offers
a structured online study course that covers seven of the 10
subjects required by the authority as well as developmental
guidance for the others.
"With the FAA system, there are basically three big
exams," Gropp said. "In New Zealand, there is a minimum
of 10 exams. The depth of knowledge is a lot deeper. Once

students get their license, they actually earn a Level 6
diploma in aeronautical maintenance certification. It's an
academic qualification as well as a license that is transferrable
to other countries."
Encouraging success
NMIT emphasizes hands-on training and problem-based
learning over memorization of theories and ideas. Students
learn on training aids and stand-alone systems, as well as
functioning aircraft. The school's fleet includes a Piper
Seneca, Cessna 182 and 150, two Robinson 22 helicopters,
and a Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter.
"It's not about memorizing a thousand things about
landing gear systems and regurgitating it on a test,"
Gropp said. "Our assessments are based on competency,
actually performing a real aircraft engineering job to
