Avionics News: What is the typical yearly salary
of one of your graduates?
Zastera: Currently, we are seeing an average salary
of $42,500 for our graduates surveyed six months after
graduating (per FVTC graduate survey). According to
salary.com, the median salary for aircraft technicians in
our area is $79,500 a year, which is good.
Avionics News: Do you offer industry training
short courses?
Zastera: FVTC has recently started offering a
16-hour short course for unmanned aircraft systems
certification. This includes the FAA drone certification
written test for commercial UAS operations.
According to the UAS program's developer and
instructor, Brian Meyer, a local agronomy company and
the agriculture department students here at FVTC were
the original drivers behind the course, but the program has
grown to certify local Department of Natural Resources
operators and private business owners/farmers.
Our program teaches students everything they need to
pass the commercial UAS written exam to obtain a remote
pilot license. This course is growing in popularity and has

already succeeded in certifying 20 remote pilots with a 100
percent first-time pass rate. This license will continue to be
a necessity for the foreseeable future, and FVTC aims to
fulfill the needs as we see the demand continue to grow.

Avionics News: Do you have any active internships
or apprentice programs with local MROs or OEMs?
Zastera: There are several local employers that
offer summer positions for our students. For example,
Gulfstream has been offering summer internships at its
Appleton, Wisconsin, completion center for a number
of years. This year, they are hiring interns for avionics,
A&P, and line maintenance. Many of these internships
result in full-time employment after graduation.
Avionics News: Do you partner with local
industry, and if so, how is it working?
Zastera: FVTC's aviation maintenance program
has an advisory committee that meets twice a year.
They provide valuable input on emerging trends and
practices in the industry. Right now, we have an enviable
list of companies on our advisory committee including
Gulfstream, Endeavor Airlines, Air Wisconsin, Basler Turbo
Conversion, Helicopter Specialties, Enstrom Helicopters,
Cessna Citation, New View Technologies, Duncan Aviation,
and Flying Colours Aviation.
