and they will help you. Take advantage
of their services.
11. Complacency. Over the years,
I've seen many students who find
the first year or so of college rather
easy. They get complacent, and when

the courses get tougher, they aren't
mentally prepared for the extra work
needed to keep up. The complacent
student is susceptible to distraction,
and they may let other factors creep in
such as lack of communication or lack
of awareness. Avoiding a complacent
attitude is important for success anywhere, especially in college.
12. Norms. In aviation, norms
refer to a procedure or action that is
not approved by the Federal Aviation
Administration or recognized as safe
by manufacturers. The normal way of
doing things might not be the correct
or safe way to do them. In the context of college matriculation, think of
norms as habits. The normal way you
go about your education should be the
right way, and the right way includes
avoiding the other 11 ways to perform
poorly or fail.
Our human factors class discusses
the management of errors. As humans,
we are unable to be perfect. At some
point, all of us will be subject to several of the dirty dozen. No doubt, at
multiple points during your time at
college, you will suffer from complacency, distraction, pressure, fatigue or
any of the other eight factors. In the
aviation workplace, the majority of errors are detected and corrected by the
technician who made the error. Keep in
mind, the correction takes more time.
If enough errors occur, even if they get
corrected, the efficiency of the technician and the shop declines, which
means less money will be made by all.
In the context of a college education, repeating a course is expensive.
Some courses are offered only once per
year, which means a student will need
to stay an extra year to complete his or
her degree. In our business, an extra
year in college, not drawing a salary,
means a loss of $50,000 or more. You
can't afford to let any of these factors
derail your education and cost you. q
