In Memory: Ronald James Carter

In Memory: James T. Griffin

Ronald "Ron" James Carter of Olathe, Kansas,
passed away Aug. 30, 2019, at the University of Kansas
Medical Center.
Carter was born Sept. 6, 1945, in Bell Gardens,
California. In 1951, the family moved to Olathe, Kansas,
and then to Gardner, Kansas, in 1958. Following
graduation from Gardner High School in 1963, he
attended Emporia State Teachers College and the
University of Kansas.
He was an aviator in the U.S. Army and the Kansas
National Guard and retired as Chief Warrant Officer (CW4)
in 1996 after serving nearly 30 years. He was a dual-rated
instructor pilot, chief safety officer at Forbes Field and flew
16 different models of airplanes and helicopters during
his career. Carter also served a tour of duty in Southeast
Asia from 1969 to 1970 flying reconnaissance airplanes
and missions supporting ground forces. He received many
awards and decorations for his service including a Bronze
Star and National Defense Medal.
After retirement from the service, Carter joined
Honeywell's Aerospace Division. He spent nearly 14
years with Honeywell and retired in 2009 having served in
various management positions. After his retirement from
Honeywell, Carter started Bulldog Aviation with his close
friend, Chuck Freeland. In 2012, Carter's youngest son,
David, joined Bulldog Aviation to begin his aviation career.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and his sons,
Lance and David. q

James T. Griffin, formerly of Dorchester
and Braintree, Massachusetts, passed away
Aug. 21, 2019, at the age of 84.
He proudly served in the United States
Navy and reserves for 22 years, and his
work as an aviation electronics technician
led to the creation of the family business.
Together with his wife, Jean, he successfully
built Griffin Avionics in 1971. They were
later joined by sons James. P. and Robert,
and daughter, Lisa. Located in Hyannis,
Massachusetts, Griffin Avionics has been an
AEA member repair station since 1974.
In addition to his AEA membership,
Griffin was a member of the Rotary Club
of Hyannis and many other aviation
organizations. He loved flying his plane
and fishing on his boat. However, his
family was the center of his world, and
he enjoyed spending time with them,
especially his many grandchildren and great
grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, five children,
18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Now in its 48th year of business, Griffin
Avionics, will continue Griffin's legacy with
his wife, Jean, and sons, Jim and Bob,
running the operation. q
