enhanced flight vision system and HUD
technologies. Yahav's efforts at Elbit
included the first EFVS for commercial
helicopters and the introduction of
wearable HUD technology to the air
transport market. So he's no stranger to
his company's hardware.
With that background, Yahav is
quick to distinguish the RCEVS
HWD display or Elbit products from
Universal Avionics' ClearVision
i-FMS. "The i-FMS is strictly
a commercial product, with no
connection to the military systems
developed by Elbit or Elbit Systems
of America," Yahav said. "The
technology used in the i-FMS
was developed separately of any
military program and by a different
technical team - due to the unique
requirements of performance, safety
and certification - all unique to the
commercial market."
Adding detail, Universal told
Avionics News that development of its
SkyLens HWD was initiated in 2006.
Since that beginning, it "underwent
several iterations based on significant
customer interactions and a thorough
development program," which included
"over 700 hours of flight testing to date
on fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft and
hundreds of hours of simulations."
"Market trends are moving in the
direction of software-based FMSs
rather than hardware, as they offer
users a more flexible and open
architecture system," Yahav said when
Universal announced its ClearVision
i-FMS. "New, innovative interfaces,
augmented to the real world utilizing
HUD technology, is where we believe
the market is heading. It's the future
of flying, and we're seeing a high
level of interest in it. What really
distinguishes our i-FMS solution is
that we designed it to support flying
by sight. It will simplify avionics and
eliminate many of the current pain
points in pilot interfaces."
Once again, available technology

is changing the human-machine
cockpit interface. Pilots have gone
from using their ears to navigate
those dark and stormy nights to
"fly-by-sight." As science fiction
writer Arthur C. Clarke famously
said, "Any sufficiently advanced

technology is indistinguishable from
magic." We're pretty sure the typical
1930s-era DC-3 captain would agree,
and that Universal Avionics is wellpositioned in that emerging market
to bring the technology to the Part 25
cockpit. q
