win Lakes Avionics is located
at Twin Lakes Airport in
Advance, North Carolina.
Its 1,200-square-foot office contains
an avionics bench lab, a business
office and a parts department. The
company stocks thousands of pieces
of hardware, electrical components
and general hosing, SCAT tubing and
more. It also has a 4,800-square-foot
hangar.
Recently, Avionics News spoke
with Jerry Jeffers to learn about his
50 years of experience working on
instruments and avionics.

No, I'm not. I started as an
instrument man in the Air Force
in 1955 and did that for 22 years.
I retired from the military in 1976
and went to work in Titusville,
Florida, for Cape Kennedy
Communication for 10 years. All
I worked on there was general
aviation avionics. That company
was sold and then closed.
I had a chance to come to
North Carolina to Asheboro,
at Causey Aviation for
maintenance and avionics. I
worked there for six years until
the company moved to Liberty,
North Carolina. I didn't want
to leave Asheboro, so I set up
my own shop in 1992 that I
owned until 2010, then I sold it
and thought I had retired. But
I decided to keep working and
got with Twin Lakes Avionics.
We talked, and I started
contracting work; it's worked
out well for four years now.

Oh my gosh, it's unbelievable.
When I started in the Air Force, we
had to learn silver soldering and
how to go into the instrument and
fix it. But the Air Force decided

that was too slow for its methods.
We went to a depot system, which
means the part was pulled and
replaced and that would keep the
airplane flying. The goal was to have
everything in the air as much as
possible.
Everything changed so much - I
went from being an instrument man
to all avionics, even radar, and then I
retired from the Air Force.

I started with the B-36, B-47 and
KC-97, then to B-52s. At that point, I
was waiting for B-52Gs and worked
on all the experimental series at
Eglin Air Force Base - the F100, 101,
102, 104 and the F-4C in Vietnam.

In civilian life, I love Beechcraft.
There's not a better airplane for an
avionics man to work on than the
Barons and the Bonanzas. Dukes are
another story.

I never thought we'd be doing
what we're doing now. Autopilots
blow my mind. We went from very
basic and everything had wires, and
now everything on the new Garmin
and S-TEC autopilots is on two wires.
How can they do that? It's really
something.
There have been so many great
advancements - from tubes to
