power-savings with equipment that's
smaller and easier to work with. To
me, the Garmin 500 and Garmin 600
are the finest autopilots. They have
features nobody else has such as the
LVL button that you press to level
the airplane. I never thought I'd see
features like that, and it's good for a
pilot to know he can do that.

I didn't get my license until 1972,
and I learned to fly in the military.
But then I had to wait until I got
two kids out of high school. I shot
40 hours in two months and got my
license. I learned to fly because I was
fascinated with aircraft and knew
being a pilot would help me in my
job. Now I have an instrument rating,
multiengine rating and a commercial
certificate. And I have a type rating
in a North American B-25.

I'm working five days a week and
put in a good eight hours - usually
from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. All I do is
installation work and a lot of ADS-B
work. I've installed a bunch of
Garmin autopilots, and an autopilot
is my favorite thing to install. To me,
age is all in your outlook and how
you look at things positively.

I have a cabin at Leesville Lake.
It's very quiet. We try to go once a
month. I don't hunt anymore, but
we mostly relax. I do a lot of work
up there, too - taking a tree down or
splitting logs. It seems every time I sit
down, I see one more thing I could do.

No, that's my girlfriend, Rebecca
- I call her Becky - and I've been
dating her for 20 years. I met her
when I had my own shop and she

had an office supply business. When
I realized she wasn't married, we
started dating in 1999. It's a great
relationship as we're together a lot,
but she has her own house and I
have my own house.

I just intend to keep working until
I get tired of working. I think about
retirement, but it doesn't appeal
to me. When I think about the
equipment, the software, the rapid
changes, it's all good for my mind to
stay active. q
