Recently, Avionics News spoke
with Sal Gamez to learn more about
his work and life outside the airport.

I am the avionics installation
manager and have been here
for nearly 10 years. We work
on numerous types of aircraft
such us King Airs, Gulfstreams,
Hawkers, Falcons and Citations.
That's one of the many reasons
I enjoy working at SoCal Jets.

I graduated from high school
in 1992, and my first job was at a
Mexican restaurant making $4.25
an hour, which was minimum wage.
I worked my way up and eventually
was making $8 an hour. I thought I
was making bank.
One day, a friend called me who
worked at an interior shop at Van
Nuys Airport and asked if I knew
anyone looking for work. I said,
"What about me?" I started at this
interior shop and worked there for
almost three years.

I met Jim Lauer with IFR
Avionics, as we would do the
interior removal for his shop. I
was offered a job at IFR Avionics
but said I would come with one
condition: I would only remove
interiors, if necessary, as I did not
want to do that for the rest of my
life. My goal was to learn how to
run wires and do avionics installs. I
started with little experience, but I
took the opportunity.

Yes, my first solo install was a
Garmin 430. I remember looking at
the drawings and the installation
manuals, and I decided that I
would program the unit myself.
I remember when I grabbed the
guy who was supposed to do
programming and checks and
he looked at me and said, "This
unit is already programmed." At
that time, I knew I wanted to
do avionics, so I worked at IFR
Avionics from 1996 to 2010.

Nick Lauer, Jim Lauer's son,
and I started our own business
together called Avionics Mobile.
We provided installation support
to shops that had the need of
good avionics technicians, and we
did that for a year and then shut it
down.
